With turkey season right around the corner, now would be a good time to brush up on your wild turkey hunting tactics.
It was the early spring in 1998, when my step father and I embarked on an adventurous turkey hunt on West Point Lake. Trey, my step father, had hunted this track of land several times the season before and had excellent success in the area we were in. He had taken a few jakes and then some very nice toms which gave me the idea that we had a leg up on the other faithfuls roaming the woods. As daylight began to break, we tried a couple of locater calls, but drew a blank so we made our way down to the food plots just above the hardwood flats that lead down to the lake. Take into consideration that I had been watching videos for several months, so I was already a pro.
The Wisconsin Turkey Season is finally upon us. As much as I look forward to hitting the woods with my trusty 12 ga. in hand, I also look forward to the Youth Turkey Hunt. At least I do now.
2008 marked the second annual youth hunt. Any child between the ages of 12-15 can participate as long as they have a valid hunter safety card. Wisconsin is broken up into many hunting zones, and for adults you have to purchase a zone specific tag. This isn't the case for the youth hunt. Young hunters can roam the state for one weekend in pursuit of their trophy tom.
(Continued)As with all other hunting, the best strategy in turkey hunting is to be in the right place at the right time. The number one key to successful hunting is "location, location, location." Locating game animals consists of two primary techniques, scouting and observing.
The most widely used hunting technique for spring turkeys is to locate a tom on the roost before sunrise, setup nearby, and use decoys or calls to get the tom to come into range. But, what do you do if you don't get a tom within a couple hours of sunrise?

Bull elk over the age of 3 years usually begin bugling shortly after they shed their velvet: from mid-August to early September. Within two to three weeks of shedding their velvet the older bulls begin associating with the cows.
Hunters may not realize that communication among ducks and geese is a combination of sound, body posture and action. The meaning of a call may be more related to body posture and action than to the sound of the call. Because it is difficult to duplicate the body posture and action of ducks and geese, you need to understand the meaning of the calls in order to correctly recreate them.
When you are hunting geese the decoys provide the visual stimulus needed to attract the geese to a particular location. The more visible the decoys are, the more effective they are at attracting geese. There are five different ways to make a decoy spread highly visible: location, numbers, size, color and movement

Every spring for years, turkey hunters have hit the field with there hen or gobbler decoys under there arms and calls in there vests. Bow hunters have stepped it up and have been taking there doe and buck decoys into the field to bag more game and draw them in close. Decoys have been used in every type of hunting known to man but many people forget and leave them out of there equipment bag when hitting the pasture to predator calling.
